Former Arsenal star Robert Pires has suggested that Kylian Mbappe could still reject a move to Real Madrid this summer.

Mbappe is seemingly destined to join Real Madrid when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires in the summer. The France international has been heavily linked with a move away from PSG in recent seasons, with this summer becoming more likely that the speculation will come true.

Arsenal were tentatively linked with a move for Mbappe earlier this year, while Premier League rivals Liverpool have also been mentioned as a potential destination for some time. However, Real Madrid are the club that rumours have speculated that Mbappe is the most likely to join in the event he leaves PSG.

Pires has experience of leaving France to join Arsenal, having signed in 2000 from Marseille. The versatile midfielder went on to score 85 goals across 284 appearances, winning two Premier League titles and three FA Cups.

The former Gunners star has revealed that he too had the opportunity to join Real Madrid, only to turn the La Liga giants down in favour of a move to Arsenal. Pires has spoken about Mbappe's future and suggested that a move to the Premier League could do the same for the PSG star as it did for him 24 years ago.

“I’m sorry, Kylian, but you weren’t the first player to say no to Real Madrid," Pires told AS. "I don’t know what decision he will make in the end, but I turned Madrid down because I had two other options.

"I’m sure that if I didn’t have the opportunity of going to Arsenal or Juventus I would have gone to Real Madrid. That’s for sure”.

Pires went on to name the Premier League club that he would like Mbappe to join this summer. Instead of naming Arsenal, Pires instead explained why he would enjoy seeing Mbappe move to Merseyside.

“I would like to see him at Liverpool," said Pires. "It’s a great family club, there’s a good structure, no pressure, the fans are level-headed.

"And I think a Salah-Mbappé partnership could be really explosive. I think he is capable of rejecting Real Madrid”.
